Have you ever wondered who was on the other end of that phone call or e-mail? Here’s a chance for you to meet your regional underwriter.

Name: Chris Baker

Job Title: Junior Underwriter |Where I’m from:  Born in Toronto and raised in Guelph | Start Date: October 2018

What do you like most about being an Underwriter?

I love being able to solve complex problems. As an Underwriter, you get an opportunity to be analytical, investigative, and solution-oriented for the benefit of Brokers and customers.

Professional background: I come from a background in engineering before getting into insurance.  Though often overlooked, one similarity between engineering and underwriting is the desire for accuracy. As an engineer, you frequently review documents to confirm if the calculations are precise. Meanwhile, in underwriting, you examine new business or policy changes to ensure information is correct.

Education or any other credentials: I have a diploma in Electrical Engineering. Initially, I wasn’t planning to be insurance, but I transitioned after speaking to a friend that worked in the industry. Since then, I’ve never regretted it.

Career aspirations: Teaching is a passion of mine, and I’m working towards a role in coaching or training in the insurance industry.

Hobbies and interests:

During my free time, I volunteer for the Canadian Ski Patrol, a charitable organization. They provide first-aid to ski resorts across Canada, including Mount St. Louie, Snow Valley, and Blue Mountain. I started as a 17-year-old, and I have spent almost 12 years responding to incidences, teaching others first-aid and educating them on safety.
