Pembridge Supports Youth and Community Through Sport
What do you get when you add basketball, a community and little touch of Pembridge support? The answer: an amazing basketball tournament that ties the community together and promotes sports for kids.
The above ingredients were present this past December 2008 at St. Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia. St. Margaret’s and surrounding areas came together to challenge one another for the top spot in the Annual Christmas Classic Invitational Basketball Tournament.
The purpose of the invitational tournament is to expose boys and girls from 6 – 17 years of age to a positive basketball experience that focuses on fair play. This year over 500 children were able to partake in the event, of which Pembridge was a co-title sponsor.
“This was the first time we participated in this tournament and we enjoyed it a great deal. It was also a nice way to bring families together over the holidays” recalls Pam Williams, a mother who volunteered at the event and whose son played in the tournament.
Friendship, the opportunity to learn new skills and youth are all part of the threads that tie together a community. It is with this understanding that Pembridge was proud to have donated $2 000.
Giving back to the communities we work in is just one of the ways Pembridge supports local initiatives.

Pembridge teams up with the Easter Seal Society
For the second straight year, Pembridge supported the Easter Seal Society by sponsoring the 2008 annual Power Play hockey tournaments in Peterborough, London and North Bay.
“We were so impressed with how participants and the communities rallied together to make all of the Power Play events such as tremendous success that we couldn’t wait to throw our support behind Easter Seals again this year. Easter Seals Power Play is a great event that is going to benefit those who need it most and Pembridge is extremely proud to be a part of the team,” said Bob Tisdale, President and COO of Pembridge Insurance Company.
The Easter Seal Society is a non-profit organization committed to helping children, youth and young adults with physical disabilities. The Power Play program invites teams in communities across Ontario to collect pledges and play in a street hockey tournament in support of the Easter Seal’s mission. This fundraising event will support disability solutions through financial assistance, summer camps, public education and awareness.
Pembridge was well represented at each of the three events by Helen Dunlop and Sephora Sciara who presented a donation in London and handed out Pembridge recyclable shopping bags. Christian Hutchison also represented Pembridge as he presented donations in Peterborough and North Bay and also participated in the North Bay tournament with broker partners from Blue Sky Financial Group.
A big thank you to the dedicated volunteers at Easter Seals and to the Pembridge representatives who volunteered to make this event a wonderful success once again.

Pembridge raises funds for WICC
On Thursday May 1, 2008, Women In Insurance Cancer Crusade (WICC), held its 5th annual Atlantic Fundraising Evening at the Three Mile Steakhouse in Saint John, New Brunswick.
Pembridge was proud to be one of many industry wide supporters for this event for the 5th straight year by hosting a “Million Dollar Bingo” table. Guests visited the Pembridge table throughout the evening purchasing raffle tickets for their chance to win 1 of 15 prize packages or a door prize valued at $100. Further excitement surrounded the table when participants were given an Atlantic Lotto ticket for their chance to win $1million.
Thank you to Brian Bilensky, Darrel Coates, Karen Steeves and the rest of the Pembridge team whose outstanding efforts were instrumental to the success of this year’s fundraising event. Together, the Pembridge team raised just over $2,300.
The evening was an immense success for WICC who increased their total funds raised over the prior years to approximately $18,000 to go toward the fight to end cancer.
Pembridge goes green with tree planting
On Sunday May 4th, Pembridge employees and their families, along with many other community volunteers, came together at George Richardson Park in Newmarket, Ontario to pitch in and plant 1,000 trees along the shores of the East Holland River. The spirited effort contributed to restoring the East Holland River and will help reduce surface runoff and water contamination, as well as enhance fish and wildlife habitats.
Pembridge staff and family were hard at work and play throughout the day and enjoyed a sunny day filled with face painting and button-making for the kids, a fundraising BBQ, ice cream, music and a prize raffle.
Thank you to all of the volunteers who came out and contributed to a successful tree-planting initiative!

Pembridge teams up to support Moisson Montréal
On February 15th, a team of Pembridge employees from Quebec represented Pembridge Insurance in another successful effort to give back to the communities in which we work and live by donating time and resources for a worthy cause.
The Quebec Pembridge team leant a hand to Moisson Montréal, helping to sort donated food, which usually ranges in volume from 40,000 to 50,000 kilos daily. Due to these large volumes, Moisson Montréal relies on the help of several volunteers each day to sort food donations and ensure it is effectively being distributed to those in need.
Moisson Montréal is the largest food bank in Canada; it serves 204 organizations on the island of Montreal, who in turn help up to 107,000 people in need on a daily basis. At Moisson Montréal, food sorting is a very important stage of the process. It is the intermediate step between receiving donations and distributing to those who need it most. Everything is sorted and placed in separate boxes. Each of the boxes becomes a food basket and is given to a needy family.
At the end of the day, the people at Moisson Montréal thanked the Pembridge team by presenting them with a souvenir to commemorate their contribution and to stress the important role that each volunteer plays in making sure that Moisson Montréal can continue to operate effectively.
Thank you to all of our volunteers, who have committed to return to Moisson Montréal and help out again. Not only have your efforts gone a long way to help those less fortunate, it also helps to remind us all to be thankful for what we have.
